Drywall Repair

Drywall is one of the most commonly used building materials. Almost every modern home or remodeled home has drywall for the wall material. It is fairly strong and easy to install. It is also easy to damage. A bump or other hard impact can dent or even put a hole in drywall. Fortunately, it is quite easy to repair. Every home owner should know how to repair holes of multiple sizes and dents, so they can keep their home looking nice.

Before getting started you need to gather the needed supplies. You will need the following:
  • Joint compound
  • Mesh panels
  • Joint tape
  • Putty knife
There are various types of drywall supplies. You should choose the supplies that suit you and the work to be done. For example, there are many different styles and sizes of putty knives. You may actually decide to buy a few different putty knives depending on the work to do.

There are three different problems you will run into when doing drywall repair. You will be repairing cracks, holes and dents. Each type of problem requires a little different approach to repair.

Cracks: If a crack occurs you will need to repair it with joint tape. You should first cover the area with joint compound. Then smooth joint tape along the crack. You must be sure that the tape is flat or the end result will not be smooth. Then apply a thin layer of joint compound to cover the tape and secure it in place.

Holes: The size of the hole will determine if you will need to use a mesh panel or not. Small holes, like nail holes, or those smaller than a couple inches can simply be filled in with joint compound. Larger holes will need to have a mesh screen placed over them to give the joint compound something to stick to. Simply apply the joint compound to cover the screen.

Dents: Dents are the easiest repair. All you need to do is simply fill them in with joint compound.

When making repairs you need to remember to use joint compound sparingly and to make sure it is smoothes out. This is important because after it has dried you will need to sand it smooth. After sanding you can repaint the area. Your wall should look good as new.
